While school choice has ascended to the top of the list of hot topics in public education over the past few months, Metis has studied school choice from a variety of perspectives over the past two decades. Check out our latest report from the Study of Choice and Special Academic Programs in Montgomery County Public Schools.

The study describes the history and origins of choice programs as fundamental components of the school district’s voluntary racial integration efforts over the past five decades. And yet, the report presents quantitative and qualitative data showing how the original goals of the choice programs have been overshadowed by program enrollment trends that are not fully aligned with district’s integration goals. As a result, these choice programs have sparked passionate debates about race, equity, and equality of education in the district.
